Migrants, education and technologies

The papers in this special collection report on challenges facing migrants or refugees in Canada, Australia, England and Sweden, and how technology can support them to overcome such challenges. The themes considered in the papers include: learning in different contexts – inside and outside the classroom; social integration and language learning; contextually sensitive learning; Smart Cities’ support for migrants; overcoming linguistic and cultural barriers and the role of informal learning. One paper considers how technology can support the process of research by investigating the role of digital technologies, in this case Computer Assisted Interviews in helping to understand refugees’ experiences.

The four papers report on participants learning in a range of different contexts, from school through to university and adult learning, and include informal learning that takes place in their everyday lives. The focus is on understanding migrants’ everyday practices in using digital technologies – mainly smartphones - to support their learning, and emphasise the social nature of language learning. The studies are small-to-medium scale, adopting either a qualitative or mixed approach. Between them, they help us to understand migrants’ practices in using smartphones for language learning, and in using digital tools as alternatives to face to face interviewing with vulnerable participants.
